Western societies are on the whole more individualistic than other parts of the world, but that does not mean that culture always stays the same. With the ongoing transformation from an industrial to a postindustrial society, values are changing and new priorities come to the fore. In particular, empirical studies show that there has been a shift from a focus on existential security toward quality of life issues such as work-life balance and environmental concerns. The lecture will present some development trends, and offer illustrations of contemporary development trends in Europe and North America, as well as comparisons with other parts of the world.
