This study focuses on understanding the effect of relative adoption speed of environmental practices on dyad level sales in buyer-supplier dyads. We want to know if the suppliers’ adoption speed of environmental practices relative to their key buyers results in any financial benefit. Prior literature in sustainable operations has examined extensively the effect of environmental practices on firm performance and most studies found a positive relationship. However, very few studies focus on the effect of relative adoption speed between a buyer and a supplier. In the eyes of buyers, a supplier’s adoption speed of environmental practices relative to them may influence how much sales they would like to allocate to a specific supplier. For suppliers, their key buyers often account for a significant portion of their sales. Suppliers can decide to become either a leader (e.g., adopting more practices earlier than their buyers) or a follower (e.g., adopting more practices later than their buyers) in the eyes of their buyers. Since adopting environmental practices always entice certain amount of investment, knowing the financial implications of relative adoption speed could provide some guidance for suppliers.
