【Student】Recipient of 2019 MOE Outstanding Academic Performance - Michal Ryznar(GHRM MBA)

【Student】Recipient of 2019 MOE Outstanding Academic Performance - Michal Ryznar(GHRM MBA)

Today we would like to tell you about another Michal’s achievement – he has been awarded Outstanding Academic Performance by Ministry of Education (MOE) of Taiwan as a Recipient of Taiwan scholarship.

Michal is currently NSYSU GHRM Program Master student, graduating this summer. He is originally from Czech Republic.

He learned about MOE scholarship during the time he was exchange student at NSYSU. At that time few of his friends, who were also recipients of MOE scholarship gave a thorough introduction to application procedures. Thus, Michal decided to take this chance and applied.

Now we congratulate him on his award!

Mr. Ryznar has been awarded for outstanding academic performance based on his average GPA. Besides, Michal is proactive students and he had contributed to social life of NSYSU and had some activities besides only taking classes:
  • internship in Hamastar technology company in Kaohsiung
  • serving one semester as a Vice president of Student association for GHRM & IBMBA International Programs
  • two semesters of being coach of NSYSU International Dragon Boat Team.
The ceremony was held in Taipei and was part of a farewell dinner for all the MOE graduates. During the ceremony, Michal and other awardees were briefly introduced to audience which comprised of numbers of representatives from different countries and Ministry of Education. Afterwards, students were invited to the stage and received certificates from the MOE representative. Mr. Ryznar explains: “During the farewell dinner I also got a chance to meet some of the representatives from Czech cultural and economic office in Taipei. I felt great honor and appreciation to be awarded as an outstanding graduate.”

Michal shares his experience and gives advice to other international students: “I would definitely encourage everyone to search for as much information as possible about MOE scholarships in your countries. It is always better to write email and ask someone specifically about your situation, rather than looking for general information on the embassy website. If you get a chance, paying personal visit to the embassy at home country is the best you can do. Another advice would be to ask for recommendation letters from educational institutions, for example Professors from University you have studied at. Even though there is a lot of documentation needed for successful application, the benefits of MOE scholarship are extensively higher and worth any kind of challenges”.

For those, who would like to apply, here are the steps to apply for MOE scholarship (as advised by Mr. Ryznar):
  1. you must go to Taiwanese cultural and economic office (or embassy) in your home country and fill the application form;
  2. submit number of required documents.
To be eligible to apply, you need to have at least Bachelor’s degree, TOEFL English certificate, and two recommendations letters.

The requirements might differ for each country as well as amount of available scholarships. In Czech Republic, ten people were awarded with MOE.

We thank Michal for extensive interview on this festive occasion and wish him luck and perseverance to have more chances of receiving awards!

Visiting from Ozyegin University, Turkey

Associate professor Ayşın Paşamehmetoğlu from Ozyegin University, Turkey had a speech about "Error Management Culture in the Hospitality Industry" on international human resource management class in College of Management, NSYSU.

Associate professor Ayşın Paşamehmetoğlu(right) from Ozyegin University, Turkey

The guest speaker, Aysin Pasamehmetoglu, started and finished the session with a quiz and videos concerning Turkey so that the students can understand more about its culture.

Then, she started to talk about a more theoretical topic concerning her researches. Being OB teacher in Turkey for many years with a major in hospitality, she introduced to everyone error management culture in the hospitality industry.

After having defined the idea of error as an unintended deviation from goal, standards, codes of behavior, etc. she explained this could have negative effects such as loss of time, production and quality, increased costs, employees’ performance and motivation decreasing in every organization. Service errors studied in hospitality and tourism areas are called service failure, it’s when service performance failing below a customer’s expectations.

Then, she mentioned service recovery, which refers to actions an organization takes to respond to a service failure. An effective management service failure is crucial as well-executed recoveries enhance customer satisfaction while poor ones lead to customer defections. In this kind of situations, she reminded us that a manager has to be quick and reactive to find a solution, the employees’ education and training are also very important to help facing mishaps. Furthermore, service recovery performance refers to frontline employees’ abilities and actions to resolve a service failure to the satisfaction of the customers.

Since these employees have the most face to face interaction with customers, they have a critical role not only on service delivery but also during the service recovery process. They offer valuable information regarding customers’ requests, complaints, expectation, etc. That’s why in the hiring process, the HR has to detect if the candidate can handle or manage errors in general rather than only focusing on errors where the customer is involved. Internal errors are as important as external ones because they have a long-term and direct effect on service quality, customer satisfaction, firm performance, etc.

As she explained, service recovery is generally acknowledged as a critical factor that drives service sector organization’s performance, it profoundly affects the company’s ability to retain customers in the face of occasional service lapses.

Eventually, the lecturer mentioned some of her researches about error and service recovery management, behavioral integrity and workplace ostracism which have a direct impact on job satisfaction, performance, organizational trust, satisfaction, stress and turnover intentions, cohesion and many other factors at work.

【Interview】GHRM MBA Alumnus:Marc Christopher Hermanski

2019-04-24/GHRM MBA/Mayya Achyldurdyyeva

Today we are providing an interview with one of our recent alumni Mr. Marc Hermanski.

Marc is originally from Germany, he is Taiwanese from maternal side and German from father’s side. Mr. Hermanski has spent his entire childhood in Germany and worked for a couple of months in China after undergraduate studies. This working experience lit up interest to get to know more about maternal routes and Marc decided to come to southern Taiwan for master’s degree. He had several interviews with some universities and decided to study at NSYSU’s GHRM English MBA Program, because it was the best fit. “Environment of the campus is wonderful, everyone is super friendly, willing to help and everything is really convenient, moreover the diverse group of students are making up a great study environment” – Marc recalls those good times we spent together at NSYSU.

As Marc knew Chinese to some extent before he came to Taiwan it was not a great challenge for him, but he still attended the free Chinese classes NSYSU offered and would highly recommend, because “the NSYSU Chinese Language Center is doing a great job in teaching. The provided materials that are easy to follow. Keep on track and try to speak and go to places where you are forced to talk Chinese”.

Marc has obtained our GHRM MBA degree this January, 2019 and is now back to Germany, as he has already found a job at BLUFIXX GmbH in the chemical industry. His job as a business development manager is it to find new market opportunities as well as consult the CEO in any strategic question.

We appreciate Marc’s desire to share his experience and wish him success in all occasions.

【Interview】GHRM MBA Student:Remco Yannick Robin Peters

2019-04-24/GHRM MBA/Mayya Achyldurdyyeva

Student Interview - Remco Yannick Robin Peters (Leader of the Student Association)
Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Current President of Student Association of International Programs at NSYSU and first year student Mr. Remco Peters gave us an interview about his background and current experience as being student of GHRM MBA program.

Remco Peters is originally from a city called Venlo, which is in the south of the Netherlands (close to the German border). Remco’s hobbies are playing football, beach volleyball, skiing and, going out. Before coming to join NSYSU’s GHRM MBA Program, he studied Finance & Control in Nijmegen. Remco is highly proactive student - he takes part in a lot of activities (according to his opinion even in too many 😊). Remco is a football player and on Sundays he plays with international football team off campus and he is part of NSYSU team in tournaments throughout the year; he is part of NSYSU Dragon Boat team and beside often plays beach volleyball at Cijin on Saturdays.

First time, Remco came to NSYSU as an exchange student (September 2016-January 2017). He enjoyed that experience so much, that he promised himself to come back and made the promise come true 😊.

Mr. Peters chose GHRM Program since it provides opportunity to broaden personal and professional horizons, as well as get wide international experience and managerial skills. According to Remco’s impression the big difference in teaching style between NSYSU and Dutch Universities is more interactivity and presentations, so he prefers presentations instead of having a lot of written reports and tests, that’s why he enjoys his studies at NSYSU. “This semester I have two subjects of which I expect they will be very interesting. The first subject is Entrepreneurship by professor Young in which we have to come up and produce a new product. The second subject is Consulting by professor David in which we have a real case study at a Taiwanese company.” – Remco shares his current study process.

Remco highly advises and promotes GHRM English MBA Program to international students: “I would advise international student just go for it and don’t worry about moving to another country, as Taiwanese people are really helpful and if you have any questions about the studies and life in Taiwan in general, they are more than willing to help.”

Answering question about future career opportunities Remco has explained: “If I move back to the Netherlands, I’m sure that the master’s degree will increase my chances of finding a job. In most European countries it is a big advantage to have a Master from other countries.”

We thank our President of Student Association of International Programs at NSYSU for the provided interview and wish him best of luck in studies and future endeavors!

【Speech】Paul Craig shared about E-commerce

2019-04-29/GHRM MBA

On March 26, 2019, Paul Craig shared his experience in e-commerce with Professor Francois’s Electronic Commerce group. Paul has almost 20 years of experience in developing, marketing, and supporting computer-based communications and customer engagement management systems. Topics presented included omni-channel customer engagement and the emergence of e-commerce platform-model businesses.

To start off, Paul outlined the macrocosm of global business, with specifics on business challenges and industry trends associated with customer engagement. There has been a radical shift from face-to-face communication to electronic-based interaction. In the 1990s, some 90% of all customer interactions were human based. This is a big contrast to today’s 30%. The move to digitally-based interaction has opened up doors to convenience and efficiency unseen before, but also added great complexity regarding the management of customer engagement across multiple channels (such as email, web and social media). Instead of managing multiple channels separately, omni-channel engagement aims to present both a single view-of-the-customer and a consistent brand image of the organization to the market across all customer engagement channels.

To achieve this, businesses have to refine the ways in which they engage with and service their customers. To understand why it’s important to profile target consumers in target markets, Paul asked the class to estimate the value of e-commerce today. The number comes out to be a surprising $500 billion USD per year, but what’s more surprising is that very few organisations know which channels are most suited to accessing their target markets to meet their business objectives.

An Omni-channel customer engagement strategy involving the entire enterprise is key to being successful in the rapidly evolving e-Commerce era. Generation-Y customers (born between 1981 and 1999) are not as patient as previous generations. Over 70% will stop supporting a business after one bad experience and 85% of those will share those experiences online using social media. Therefore, in addition to offering excellent products and services, making it easy for customers to interact with organizations is crucial to achieving customer loyalty. Paul stressed that customers loyal to a brand may not care too much about post-purchase service at the time of purchase, but they are four times more likely to be disloyal if they are dissatisfied with customer service following their purchase. To deliver successful omni-channel customer engagement it has to be understood that it is not enough to only manage external interactions with customers. Supporting back office functions such as billing and logistics integrated with customer enagement capabilities play a key role in customer satisfaction. Paul concluded that a business cannot deliver e-commerce without sophisticated communications and computing technologies.

To wrap up the discussion, Paul discussed considerations associated with launching a successful eCommerce business built on the platform model. Essentially, platform businesses have developed systems (platforms) that bring producers and consumers of products and services together using the Internet. Examples of highly successful platform businesses include Netflix, Uber, Google and Apple. For such businesses, scale is everything for them to be profitable and sustainable. They need to attract not only consumers but producers in large numbers for their business to be successful. Therefore, managing and maintaining both producers and suppliers’ relationships are important and ought to be monitored closely. Paul concluded that it is envisaged that technical, business and financial platforms will continue to be developed to further enable the exciting evolution of e-commerce.

【Interview】GHRM MBA Alumna:Linda Lin

2019-04-29/GHRM MBA

Dear Friends, our former President of International Programs Student Association and now already GHRM English MBA Program alumna Ms. Linda has kindly gave us an interview about her background and experience of being part of GHRM Program.

Linda is from Taipei and has studied International Business for her bachelor’s degree. She is very much into traveling, language learning (now can speak and listen for daily life in Thai language). While looking for the opportunities of gaining dual degrees, Linda found that GHRM is the program that provides two different fields of dual degrees, that is, Human Resource Management and International Business.

As mentioned, during her studies, Linda was part of the Student Association of International Programs. Together with the Student Association team, they have held activities like company field trips, keynote speech, alumni gatherings. Linda suggests that to be a graduate student is more challenging, as “You get to know yourself more. Being a graduate student suggest that we have to be more independent and look for answers instead of simply asking questions. It’s probably not fun, but you surely learn from challenges” explains Linda. The most interesting subject for Linda was “IT human resource management” instructed by Professor Chi: “The course was splendid, you get to meet professionals from big companies and get to learn their practices. They were not shy to share their experience, and professor has taught some real life assessment methods, and I still keep the course handout!” says Linda 😊

Linda has just graduated and is now looking for work, she says that having dual degree from NSYSU and NTU gives her better chances and makes her more competitive on a job market: “I have get some interview opportunities that I couldn’t imagine getting if I don’t have this diploma. Interviewers are also curious about my dual degree program, and that has helped with opening and talk about who I am, how I work, and what kind of person I am.”

For future GHRM English MBA Program students, Linda’s advice will be: “Be independent and put as much effort as possible. You enrolled into the program, that means you’re qualified as a postgraduate student. Think before you act, act before comments made. Apart from that, I would recommend students to have an internship throughout the study in order to gain more practical experience.”

We wish Linda every success in her career path and thank her for the interview.

【Interview】IBMBA Alumnus:Drake Kutz

2019-05-01/IBMBA

Drake Kutz has lived in Taiwan for the past few years, and is a shining archetype of success. Upon graduation from the NSYSU IBMBA program in June of 2018, he quickly secured employment as a technical project manager at Fun Podium, a video game developer, in Taipei. His current job duties in the esoteric tech industry involve a basic step-by-step process: communication with product owners and external clients, then helping them to turn their software needs and designs into technical requirements. Finally, he turns those requirements into a project plan, and leads development and quality assurance teams through a software development lifecycle.

Drake has had a keen interest in software and hardware development since he was a kid, and therefore had some past experience working in game development in his home state of Louisiana, in the USA. He decided to move to Taiwan around 2015 and work remotely. Due to the fact that a master’s degree can increase one’s chances of gaining employment in a management position, Drake decided to pursue his IBMBA at NSYSU.

Studying in Taiwan provided Drake with unique exposure to Taiwanese culture and real-time, practical experience of the way business is done in Taiwan. He really enjoyed classes which linked students with Taiwanese companies in order to gain practical insights; one class he enjoyed the most was Seminars in Business Management, a class in which students interact with local businesses and managers!

One of the most important actions students who are nearing graduation can take is to establish communication connections between themselves and potential employers. A unique method Drake used in order to gain employment was attending the Computex trade-show in Taipei, where he met potential employees face to face and first established relationships, then secured a job. Drake advocates that this is the key to networking: find local industry events, contact people who are in the industry you are interested in and take them to coffee, and figure out ways in which you can gain industry experience! In sum, being proactive like that is much more valuable and effective than throwing your resume into online recruiting sites. I hope you found Drake’s career experience and advice as useful as I did!

【Interview】IBMBA Alumnus:Nguyen Tuan Duong

2019-05-01/IBMBA

Some students come to NSYSU to pursue a master’s degree, and by means of the academic process, they become enamored in the academic rigor that composes such a large proportion of attaining a degree. One of these students, Nguyen Tuan Duong, a graduate of IBMBA 104, developed such an intense passion for business and management academics that he decided to pursue his PhD in Business Administration here at NSYSU!

Duong is originally from Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. There, he completed his undergraduate degree at the Foreign Trade University, and worked at that university for 5 years, as a researcher and lecturer. Then, wanting to improve his research skills, strengthen his English abilities and enhance his international outlook, he came to NSYSU. He chose NSYSU due to its relatively nice weather compared to universities in northern Taiwan, the pace of life and the quality of the instructors here at NSYSU. Ultimately, Duong enjoys being immersed in a diverse student body from several countries and cultures, one of the hallmarks of an international program.

Pursuing a PhD has taught Duong many academic skills and abilities. By reading stacks and piles of academic literature, Duong definitely says that his ability to quickly locate key information tucked away in dense writing has improved a lot. Additionally, through constant use, Duong has become confident using SPSS software; moreover, he has also begun to learn AMOS software. These critical software skills will not only aid him in articulating his views, they provide a foundation of skills that he will use in the future.

While Duong hasn’t yet determined a dissertation topic, he is currently researching organizational behavior of firms. He says that one needs to choose a dissertation topic carefully, because this is a topic which they will study not only for the remainder of their PhD program, but potentially for the rest of their life!

In order to get a job or get into a PhD program, Duong wisely believes to look at the job market through the lens of a marketer: you are the product and the company is the consumer. Find a segment you are interested in, target that segment, and then position yourself to get that position. A clear plan combined with patience is key to getting hired of accepted.

After completing his PhD, Duong hopes to go back to Vietnam and work in academia. There, he is also interested in creating a dual degree program between Taiwan universities and Vietnamese universities. This goal could potentially add a lot of value for all universities involved, and give students a greater understanding of how commerce is carried out in different parts of the world!

【Speech】How to Start and Grow Business by Mr. Ken Fujiwara

2019-04-29/GHRM MBA

Our College of Management alumnus Mr. Ken Fujiwara gave a speech at NSYSU in Professor Young Ko’s class on the following topic: Strategy and entrepreneurship: how to start and grow business. We are glad to share an info about Ken’s background and the contents of the speech.

Personal experiences:
After graduating from Seattle University, Ken started being a car salesman in Toyota. After a few years, he was headhunted by Mercedes-Benz as a Project manager, then headhunted again after six months to be a regional manager.
When he was in the United States after college, he also served in the US military for about 2 years and was stationed in Iraq for 3 months. He decided to come home to Taiwan after 2 peers of his sacrificed during battles.

As an entrepreneur, Ken has several businesses going at the same time. He started the scooter leasing business targeting foreigners and local students for short-term leases or rental. Another business he has, which is running steadily, is a language educational school. In addition, he also owns a car sales business and an AI system business.

During the speech, Ken shared some business strategies to us with his personal business running examples.
Differentiation:
Ken’s scooter leasing company also offers transportation services, and different payment methods (Paypal and bitcoin), customers can even pay at convenience stores too. The strategic differentiation highlights the user experience for their customers.
Another example is that, their AI system used for Online check-in might seem costly to their customers (it costs 2.5 million NTD), but it turned out to save their customers almost 3 million NTD in labor costs, pension and insurance costs at the end of the year. This tells us, differentiation can sometimes also save costs when it is properly executed.

Customer experience:
Brand positioning is important to make your customers feel like they are in a higher status to enjoy your service. With the prestige branding, although Starbucks and 7/11 use the same coffee beans (according to Ken) but the prices are totally different for an Americano (from $150 to $35 a cup).

Customer profile:
Expand your customer base and connections, and don’t trust anyone, because the business world is evil! Especially in regions you are not familiar with, you need to be careful about people talking big games. Also check the trade quotas and import/export taxes for countries that you want to do business with (for both suppliers and buyers).

Lastly, Ken mentioned that entrepreneurship is 50% luck, and 50% hard work. In a way, starting a start-up as an entrepreneur is to start begging for money when asking for venture capitals. This is one of the reasons why Ken did not ask for angel investors or venture capitals. They will also interfere your business decisions, especially when you are making profits.
His advice is to start business in a small scale and only use your personal savings or your personal capital. In the future, when people are interested, they will provide investment and capitals willingly without asking.

We thank Ken for his brilliant and practical speech and wish him success in future endeavors!

As for the impressions of University and students, Dr. Kim says: “NSYSU shows super beautiful and nature-friendly. Many of leading universities, including Yonsei University in Korea, are in historical buildings and nature-friendly environments. However, I’ve never seen a school, which has such a great landscape both mountains and sea. Moreover, it is attractive to be able to easily go to the commercial area. Having a combination of history, nature, and convenience of life is NSYSU's greatest advantage. Students of NSYSU seem to be curious about various issues and have a passion both for learning and activities, they are all well-mannered and friendly. That helps my settling down in Kaohsiung (Thank you!! )”. Currently Professor Kim is teaching Research Methodology for GHRM MBA students (quantitative research part in specific), and International Marketing Management for IBMBA and exchange students. She thinks it is beautiful to listen to various opinions of students as it helps logical thinking and creativity.

Challenge is an essential part of my life. It was my first challenge to quit my job and go back to school to study for PhD degree. Working at NSYSU is my second challenge in life. I believe that all these challenges and experiences make my life much happier and more valuable.”

【Student】Midterm Celebration: Picnic and Laser Tag

2019-05-09/GHRM MBA

April 30, 2019 - After a rough midterm week, the Student Association held an event to pay off students’ hard work. The event was divided into two parts. The first part was a picnic where students gave feedback about their courses while having good food, which was from noon till 2 PM. The second part was an intense laser tag battle, which was from 6 PM till 9 PM.

The SA provided pizza, chips, and drinks for the students of our International Programs during lunch time. The picnic was held around the statue at the courtyard, wherein around 40 people were present. Some of professors, who were available (Thijs, Tan, and Kim), also joined and supported the event. The most important part of the picnic was not only students and professors connecting and socializing, but also getting feedback from the participants which they filled in on sheets provided by the SA. The feedback sheet was including both positive and negative feedback of the courses, the International program office, and the SA. SA got about 40 feedback sheets during the event and also got numerous of useful information for making the International Program better. For example, some students mentioned that specific courses were interesting and that the professors cared about their students. However, other students suggested that the professors can adjust the tempo in class. The feedback provided by the students was really useful and insightful, which will make significant improvement to our International Programs.

Later that day, around 6pm, the SA organized a laser tag competition in which 30 students participated. The students were separated to 6 teams and during the two hours they could compete with two different teams. The main purpose of the SA to hold the laser tag competition was to increase the mutual relationship between students even further and to make them feel part of the International Programs. Most of the students do not have the same courses or no courses together at all. The SA members felt it as their responsibility to make students feel part of the International Programs.

The events had an internal and external effect on our International Programs. The internal effect is based on the continuously improving the professors, office, students, and SA. The external effect is creating visibility of our Programs by putting the banners of the International Programs at the event venues on campus and at Dream Mall. This will definitely catch the eyes of students passing by, especially seeing a mix of students who are from all over the world which will take our Programs to a more international level. The international level is what Taiwanese students need now. The SA members feel that more activities should be held to improve and promote our International Programs.
