After years of construction, the “Lasertek International Conference Hall” (hereinafter referred to as Lasertek Hall) of EMBA Center, College of Management, National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) was officially completed on March 24, 2020. The Lasertek Hall was named after the Lasertek company. The Lasertek chairman Tsai-Hsing Cheng who is also NSYSU EMBA alumnus and his company had donated a total of NT$ 6 million for the renovation. After the unveiling ceremony, Cheng convened a board meeting which was attended by the board members, supervisor, and remuneration committee members from the Lasertek Company at the Lasertek Hall. They were all very proud of the completion of the Lasertek Hall.

During the unveiling ceremony, many guests, including President Ying-Yao Cheng, NSYSU, Dean San-Yih Hwang, College of Management, Deputy Dean Jui-Kun Kuo, Deputy Dean Shu-Chuan Yeh, Professor Ting-Peng Liang, Department of Information Management, Director Chun-Tuan Chang, Department of Business Management, Retired Professor De-Ming Liu, Department of Finance, and College of Management Alumni Association President Lung-yin Hsieh(EMBA-16), Secretary-General Chun-lung Wang (EMBA-16), and alumnus Lai-Fu Huang(EMBA-3), attended and offered their congratulations in person.

Dean San-Yih Hwang shared the renovation process since the College taking over the 11th floor of library in 2015. It has gone through repair work for top floor leakage, collapsed ceiling due to Typhoon Meranti, tendering for the design contract of the EMBA Center and due to limited funding, the construction of the classrooms on the north side was prioritized, etc. Than by the end of 2017, the design of the Lasertek Hall was completed. In March 2020, the construction was finally completed. Dean Hwang particularly appreciated the help of Chairman Cheng and alumni who donated the stereo equipment and furniture, and staff who participated in the renovation process from start to finish. "It was through a collective effort that we were able to create such a world-class international conference hall," said Dean Hwang.

President Ying-Yao Cheng also pointed out that all NSYSU alumni had been committed to improving their alma mater, which was evident to all, regardless of the college and department, he was very grateful for every effort. He also mentioned his relationship with Chairman Tsai-Hsing Cheng. Besides sharing the same surname, they both have deep connection with NSYSU. President Cheng commented, "We even share the same birthday, which means he and I will keep working to make the school better", which provoked a roar of laughter among the audience.

【ACT】Culture clash! Students of ACT Program learn how to manage an Asian company

(Provided by the College of Management) Chair Professor Wanda Sung-Hwa Tseng started a course "The Asian Business Context" for the ACT Global Program at the College of Management, NSYSU. The course objective is to examine the politics, society, economic policies and conditions and commercial effects in different Asian countries, engaging the enrolled students in discussion, analysis, and multicultural exchange. The enrolled students attended some guided visits to local companies to gain a deeper understanding of their operation and problems. During the term, the students visited local companies of different sectors and sizes in Kaohsiung, including, Brogent Technologies, China Steel Corporation, and Ching Chan Optical Technology. Many key people in these companies are NSYSU alumni; the students could talk to them, gain more experience and understand how to apply what they have learned.

The founder of Brogent Technologies, Chih-Hung Ouyang, is an outstanding alumnus of the Department of Electrical Engineering, NSYSU. Thanks to his knowledge and abilities, he made Brogent Technologies become one of the leaders of simulation technologies. Jiang An, Director of the International Business Development Division at Brogent Technologies, made a presentation on the development of the company and mentioned that both he and Chih-Hung Ouyang are alumni of NSYSU. Several years ago, he was invited to join the Division and help expand the scope of the company overseas together. He added that this also proves the importance of networking and advised the students to learn how to expand and manage their social networks. Classmates shall value the time spent together as they may become future business partners. Another employee receiving the students was Andrea Ort, who is an alumnus of the ACT Program from Canada. After completing the Program, she got an internship opportunity at Brogent Technologies and later became a full-time employee of the International Business Development Division. She encouraged the students to maintain a positive and active approach, only then the company will notice their value as potential employees worth the trouble of applying for a working visa for a foreign professional.

Wei-Kun Kuo, the staff from the Department of Public Affairs, China Steel Corporation, guided the students to see the operation site and steel processing machinery. The students asked questions about the impact of the China-USA trade war. Kuo pointed out that the steel industry is not much affected by the fluctuations of the economy. Also, most of the customers of China Steel Corporation are in Taiwan and the export rate is quite low, thus the company is not directly influenced. With the raising concerns about environmental issues, the students were also interested in the issue of alarming carbon emissions of the steel industry. China Steel Corporation said that the company’s most recent ten-years’ program includes the acquisition of new machinery to replace the old ones to lower carbon emissions. Currently China Steel Corporation is in the process of renewing its machinery, with a budget of NTD 10 billion allocated for this purpose. Replacement of the entire machinery will result in lower carbon emissions. The manager of the HR Department of China Steel Corporation replied to a student’s question about the requirements for a future employee of the company, saying that professional abilities are the most important recruitment criterion and that honesty is valued as well.

Students of the ACT Program visited Ching Chan Optical Technology Co. in the Hunei District in Kaohsiung and observed the process of production and selection of screws in the factory. The students noticed that a great amount of screws is eliminated in the process. Manager’s Representative of Ching Chan Optical Technology Co. said that defective goods used to be eliminated in the last manufacturing stage, thus, a decision was taken to implement more restrictive standards in the initial phase of the process. This embodies the company’s mission to exceed customer’s expectations. Besides, some students also asked questions concerning issues such as the environment, energy sources, and sustainable development. Ching Chan Optical Technology Co. installed solar panels on the rooftop of its manufacturing plant; the panels supply more than 90% of the energy consumed by the plant.

The students appreciated the visits and the fact that they could personally watch all the different processes in the production plants. Mario, a student from Johannes Kepler University in Austria, said that steel companies are operating in the proximity of his alma mater. He now had the opportunity to visit a company of the same sector in Taiwan, get to know its operation model and compare the working environment, safety regulations, and gender equality issues in Austria and Taiwan that made the visit a valuable experience.

She loves playing with her Guinea pig and reading books related to her majors such as Management, Human Resource Development and soft skills. Duyen Anh is currently working as a Training Coordinator at Power Engineering Consulting JSC 2 (PECC2).

Anh’s Bachelor was in Information Management System. Soon after working as a fulltime employee, she realized that her strong interest was in Human Resource. She decided to pursue a Master Degree in Taiwan because of several reasons: “Taiwan has a reputation for their great education system among Asia. This is a really friendly country and the cost of living is affordable. I also had a chance to learn Mandarin”, Duyen Anh explained.

Duyen Anh shared her expressions about the GHRM MBA English program: “I think the best thing about this program is being taught by Prof. Nai-Wen Chi, Prof. David and Prof. Yu-Hsuan Wang, who are awesome professors dedicated in sharing their knowledge and helping their students with thesis”.

Giving some advises to students who are going to graduate from GHRM MBA/ IBMBA, Duyen Anh suggested that students should participate in activities, which are held by the Students Association and Colleague because this is the easiest way to get more friends and make connections. 【Dual Degree Program】Experience sharing from Julie Chen

Julie Chen
•Originally from Taiwan
•Student of NTU, England
•Doing Dual Degree Program in NSYSU, Taiwan

The National Sun Yat-sen University offers a wide array of dual degree programs in which students can participate for an additional degree. One of such students was Julie Chen from Taiwan, who came back from Nottingham Trent University, England. The Students Association met with Julie and asked a few questions about her experience.

-Could you please tell us a bit more about yourself? What are you studying right now?

When I was undergraduate student in Taiwan I applied for dual degree program to NTU, England. Thus, I spent my last year of university in Nottingham doing International Business. Currently, I am studying Global Human Resources Management in NSYSU in order to get my second degree.

-Why did you choose Taiwan and this Master?

The main reason why I chose Taiwan is my family. I am Taiwanese and for me it is important to be close to my parents. Additionally, despite of the fact that we had options for the countries, however, only NSYSU was offering courses related to Human Resources, which for me was exactly what I was looking for. As I can say so far, I see my future career connected to allocating Human Resources, therefore I need to get as much knowledge in that area as possible.

-Did you check other options for this program except Taiwan? What was your criteria for deciding?

We had some options in France, Italy and Portugal. All of them are in Europe that for me was a decisive factor. For me it was quite clear since only NSYSU was in Asia and offered GHRM Program.

-How do you find studying in NSYSU compare to NTU? What is the main deference from your point of view?

Actually, from my point of view, Asian education in general is based on “one-way” teaching method. The professors are mostly having their own lectures and students have to listen to them. Meanwhile, in England there is more interaction between students and teachers. I think, both education methods have their pros and cons but speaking specifically, the main difference for me was the structure of the courses. NTU has its own small semesters inside the semester. We have only one class during the whole month and we are concentrating only on one subject, therefore it is quite intense. Whereas, in Taiwan you have many classes during one semester, which I find quite diverse.

-Would you recommend this program to your friends?

Yes, definitely. From my perspective, for students studying at National Sun Yat-sen University, this is a very good opportunity to get acquainted with the culture of other countries and to be more aware of a possible profession abroad. In addition, an important factor is that for Taiwanese students a double degree program in England is relatively not that inexpensive.

【Dual Degree Program】Experience sharing from Agata Gajek

Agata Gajek
•Originally from Poland
•Lived in UK for 5 years
•Student of NTU, England
•Doing Dual Degree Program in NSYSU, Taiwan

The National Sun Yat-sen University offers a wide array of dual degree programs in which students can participate for an additional degree. One of such students was Agata Gajek from Poland, who came to Taiwan from Nottingham Trent University, England. The Students Association met with Agata and asked a few questions about her experience.

-Could you please tell us a bit more about yourself? What are you studying right now?

I started my bachelor degree in NTU doing Mandarin Chinese and Global Studies and then I wanted to do an International Business Masters and which was the best option to combine those two undergraduate programs together. Anyhow, I decided to do dual degree in the same university (Nottingham Trent University) as my Bachelor and I have chosen Taiwan for dual degree as a good opportunity to improve my Chinese. Currently, I am the part of Global Human Recourses Management Program in NSYSU.

-Why did you choose this Master?

As I mentioned before, I have chosen this Master mostly because there was an option to go to Taiwan. To be honest, I did not really look at the specific courses that NSYSU were offering. I just wanted to be back in Asia and continue improving my Chinese. I strongly believe when you learn the language, you need to be in that environment. So far, I do not have any courses related to HR even though I am doing GHRM Program, but I am learning International Business which I find quite helpful especially for my CV. Some of the courses I find really enjoyable, such as Asia Pacific, E-commerce and etc. This is my second part of dual degree. I finished first one already in England and might thinking to find internship here, in Taiwan, for summer.

-Why did you start learning Chinese?

It is quite a long story. First, I went to Medical School but, at some point, I realized that I did not like it and did not see my future in this sphere. At that time, my father suggested me to learn Chinese because this language was getting more and more popular all over the world. So, I went for it and started to do it in Poland but was completely not satisfied since there was no chance to go to China. Eventually, I had started to work with my father and later applied for NTU. During my Bachelor degree I had gone to Beijing for half a year and then after graduation decided to apply for Dual Degree Master Program.

-Did you check other options for this program except Taiwan? What was your criteria for deciding?

I had to choose two countries as a requirement for the form but my priority was always Taiwan. Luckily, on the first week of studying one student from NSYSU arrived to Nottingham and gave us a lot of useful information about the university, so I did not have to check everything through the Internet.

-You have been living in Kaohsiung for 4 weeks already. How do you feel about it? What is your impression?

Honestly, for me everything here has a holiday vibe since I lived in England almost five years and comparing weather in those two countries, Taiwan’s one got the highest score (laughing). I personally enjoy time here.

-How do you find studying in NSYSU compare to NTU? What is the main deference from your point of view?

Talking about educational part, Nottingham is quite intense. We have lectures six hours a day of the same subject twice or three times per week. Basically, you need to work much more in one month on a particular research, but I, personally, like it. Here, in Taiwan, I feel that I need to focus on different objectives to get the grades for one course. Also, I do not know my team in courses that well for group projects and stuff and it will take time too. Apart from that, the relationship between students and teachers are quite different as well. In NTU communication with professors is based on flexibility and I know that I can ask anything. Meanwhile, here all teachers are obviously very nice, however, sometimes I would be scared to ask some questions. Probably, it can be explained by the fact that I am still relatively new here.

-Would you recommend this program to your friends?

Yes, I would. If you start it in UK, Taiwan is the best place to choose out of all the other places that we had. Living in Europe and do not use a chance to experience such a different culture is not right. You need to use any opportunities to make your outlook wider. Even if you do not know Chinese, it is definitely worth it.
